A Day of International Action for a Free Burma
Support the People of Burma and the Buddhist Monks in Burma
Note: Events also happening in Palmerston North, Christchurch and Dunedin - click here for details
Wellington - Saturday 6th October, 12noon - 2pm, Civic Square, Wellington, New Zealand
As part of the global day of action we will be holding a peace vigil to keep the world's attention on the plight of the Burmese people and Buddhist monks.
Events are taking place in every major city in the world at 12noon on Saturday 6th October so come show your support and solidarity for the people of Burma.
This will be a multi-denominational event and you are invited to wear red to symbolise the colour of the monks' robes. There will also be red armbands and headbands available - you can tie them onto yourself or onto the nearest tree, if you like. And it's happening rain or shine, so bring a red raincoat! You can also join the 11.30am procession leaving the top of Cuba Mall (at Ghuznee Street) for Civic Square.
Speakers will include people from the Burmese community, Amnesty International and the Council of Trade Unions. We'll be chanting with the monks, and MPs have been invited along too.

Burma or Myanmar?
If you're confused as to why some people call it Burma and some Myanmar, please read this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7013943.stm
In brief, it's known as Myanmar in many countries and at the UN. But the UK and USA doesn't recognise the legitimacy of the regime that changed the name, therefore still uses the pre-military dictatorship name (Burma). However, that being said, it's important also to recognise that some people choose to call it Myanmar, as Burma was the name given to the country during British colonisation.
