Fairness @ Work Plays of the Week Issue 12
Welcome to Plays of the Week - a weekly heads up from the Council of Trade Unions Fairness @ Work campaign.
What's next for KiwiSaver and work rights?
Check out the second installment of the CTU’s online election trilogy, which hit the net today. It’s a must-see for Middle Earth fans… You can see it here: http://nz.youtube.com/nzctu. While you’re there, make sure you subscribe to our videos or bookmark this page, because there will be one more where it came from next week!
Security in a slowing economy
Labour announced initiatives today to give workers more security as the economy slows. The main feature is a job search allowance for workers who have been in the workforce for 5 years or more, and are laid-off. National will announce their package tomorrow, and unions say they first need to shelve their 'fire at will' policy - removing the right of appeal against unfair dismissal in the first 90 days from all workers starting work in small firms.
Did you know?
Did you know that a third of Kiwi workers would be affected by National’s proposed 90 day Fire at Will period? 31 per cent of Kiwi workers work in small businesses – and it would be their rights that would be taken away, right at a time when workers are feeling uncertain about what’s around the corner.
