NZCTU supports Climate Strike

The Council of Trade Unions supports young people who are taking action this Friday and striking for Climate Justice.

All across New Zealand young people will be taking collective action on Friday to demand that the government do more to look after our planet and do more to prevent further global warming.

“Young people are concerned about the state of the planet and they are organising to make a difference. We stand alongside them and also whole-heartedly believe that change is necessary and possible,” CTU Secretary, Sam Huggard said.

“Taking action to demand a better world is an extremely powerful thing for anyone to do. Young people taking collective action to make the world a better place for everyone is to be applauded.”

“The science is clear that there is no future for us on our planet in the long term if we can’t move past relying on fossil fuels. As the rallying cry of the trade union movement globally on climate change puts it- there are no jobs on a dead planet.”

“However how we manage this transition is critical – as New Zealand has not managed recent transitions well at all.”

“We stand for a Just Transition – the essence of which is simple: the costs of the necessary changes that deliver all of us a more stable climate, must be spread evenly amongst us and not fall heavily and disproportionately on workers, in particular in carbon exposed industries,” Huggard said.
